Senior Scientist - Assay and Screening Services

We have a great opportunity for an experienced cell biologist to work as part of our Assay Services Team focused on supplying contract research services (target ID, target validation and translational research) to the biotech and pharma community to support drug discovery programmes throughout the pre-clinical process.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and perform cell based assays
  • Design and execute bespoke work packages in accordance with client brief or for internal research programmes
  • Carry out complex tasks independently
  • Identify and solve problems associated with their own experiments
  • Interpret experimental data and play a role in planning of further experiments
  • Operate as Project Lead, where appropriate
  • Maintain an awareness of the current techniques/technologies and apply these to experimental design
  • Reporting on milestone delivery and project status to Project Lead, Manager, and Project Management Office
  • Be an effective team member in supporting the research and development functions in Horizon
  • Act as a mentor to junior staff within discipline
  • Contribute to training/development of the team
  • Seek to understand underlying issues or needs and proactively engages customers in the development or identification of solutions, products or services
  • Hold others accountable for high standards
  • Clarify what needs to be accomplished, why, and the consequences for the individual and/or

CORE SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Excellent cell biology expertise such as growth or imaging assays, ELISA, Western blotting, CRISPR-Cas9 or si/shRNA techniques, FACS assays and cellular manipulation such as generation of stable cell lines.
  • A strong background in a disease area and the ability to quickly learn new techniques and areas of biology
  • Experienced in assay development
  • Good planning and excellent organisation skills
  • Work independently and manage own workload
  • Think more broadly than the immediate role and use this insight to challenge and evolve current approaches/ways of doing things
  • Work at pace, maintain a high workload, work under pressure and make decisions in the absence of complete information in an environment with frequently changing priorities
  • Interact widely with acknowledged experts within and outside own discipline
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Logical, analytical, creative and self-critical
  • A careful and meticulous nature with exceptional attention to detail

This is a lab-based role and candidates should be highly self-motivated and able to work to tight timelines.  Excellent communication skills, a careful and meticulous nature and attention to detail are essential.
