Senior/ Principal Scientist - Genetic Screening- Maternity Cover

We are looking to recruit a talented and highly motivated cell biologist to work as part of our Functional Genomic Screening Team focused on providing translational research services, primarily CRISPR-Cas9 screening, to the biotech and pharma community to support drug discovery programmes throughout the pre-clinical process. This is a 14 month contract.


As a the Senior/ Principal Scientist you will act as project leader on complex, multi factorial projects

  • Design, plan and execute complex research programmes
  • Drive projects forward with scientific vision
  • Analyse and interpret experimental data
  • Lead contributor for the planning of further experiments
  • Identify and solve problems associated with their own and others’ experiments
  • Report on milestone delivery and project status to Department Manager
  • Ensure all records are accurately maintained
  • To connect with field experts internally and externally.

It is also essential that you maintain an awareness of current technologies and apply these to experimental design.

To be an effective team member  by supporting the research and development functions in Horizon and assisting the team by training and developing junior team members and acting as a role model for others.  You will also be expected to contribute on formulating the strategic direction of the team and the overall company objectives.


  • Experienced in mammalian cell culture with excellent aseptic technique
  • Extensive experience of pooled functional genomic screening e.g. CRISPR-Cas9, shRNA or gene trap
  • Demonstrable expertise and skill in molecular biology
  • Substantial experience of flow cytometry analysis and large-scale sorting
  • Experience of handling large datasets including with NGS data
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work at pace and run complex experiments independently, driving experimental design and troubleshooting
  • Ability to quickly learn new techniques and areas of biology
  • Good planning and excellent organisation skills
  • A careful and meticulous nature and attention to detail


  • Experience of drug interaction and synthetic lethality screening
  • Safe handling and production of lentiviral reagents
  • Experience in assay development

You will ideally have a PhD plus 5 year's experience in cell biology, biochemistry or genetics.

This is primarily a lab-based role and candidates should be highly self-motivated, able to work to tight timelines and be comfortable working with shifting priorities.  Excellent communication skills, a careful and meticulous nature and attention to detail are essential.
