Senior Scientist (14 months maternity cover)

We are looking to recruit an experienced cell and molecular biologist to work as part of our Therapeutics Research and Development Team focused on target ID, target validation and translational research to support drug discovery programmes throughout the pre-clinical process.



  • To plan and carry out cell based assays; design and execute bespoke work packages in accordance with project plans for internal research programmes.
  • To maintain an awareness of the current techniques/technologies and apply these to experimental design.
  • Report on milestone delivery and project status to Project Lead, Team Leader, Group Leader or client.
  • To interpret experimental data and play a role in planning of further experiments.
  • To identify and solve problems associated with their own experiments.
  • To be an effective team member in supporting the research and development functions in Horizon.


  • Excellent cell biology expertise, such as proliferation or imaging assays, ELISA, western blotting, si/shRNA techniques, knowledge of CRISPR–Cas9 applications, FACS and cellular manipulation, such as the generation of stable cell lines.
  • Demonstrable expertise and skill in molecular biology, including complex molecular cloning experience and expert manipulation of DNA/RNA.
  • A strong background in oncology and/or immunology and ability to quickly learn new techniques and areas of biology.
  • Good planning skills, attention to detail and excellent organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, contributing to experimental design and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to plan and execute minor projects independently.
  • Experience of handling large datasets including with NGS data.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.



  • Experience of drug interaction and synthetic lethality screening
  • Safe handling and production of lentiviral reagents
  • Experience in assay development


The ideal applicant will have a PhD plus at least 2 years’ postdoctoral experience in cell biology, biochemistry or genetics.  This is a lab-based role and candidates should be highly self-motivated and able to work to tight timelines.  

You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, team environment and on multiple projects with constantly changing priorities and deadlines, be well organized, self-motivated and have excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
